Oil pulling, also known as gandusha in Ayurvedic medicine, is a fantastic oral procedure that is simply done by swishing a tablespoon of oil (typically coconut oil, olive oil, or sesame oil) in your mouth for 10-20 minutes.
Oil pulling cleans (detoxifies) the oral cavity in the same way that soap cleans dirty dishes. It literally suctions the dirt (toxins) out of your mouth, creating a clean, antiseptic oral environment that aids in the proper flow of dental liquid required to prevent cavities and disease.

Oil pulling can occasionally cause the gag reflex in some people. If this occurs, try leaning your head forward slightly and using a little less oil. Warming the oil slightly can also make it thinner and less likely to cause gagging.
How Does Oil Pulling Work?
This is how coconut oil pulling is done:
- Make an effort to oil pull first thing in the morning, right after you get out of bed, before brushing your teeth or drinking anything. It’s often a good thing to do in the shower.
- Swish one tablespoon of coconut oil gently in your mouth and between your teeth for 10-15 minutes, being careful not to swallow any of the oil. (Do this gently to avoid wearing out your jaw and cheeks!)
- Spit the oil into the garbage and immediately rinse your mouth with warm water (use salt water for added antimicrobial properties).
- Finally, brush your teeth as you normally would.
- That’s all there is to it!
